Primary vs secondary research: what's the difference?
The difference between primary and secondary research, when to use each, and how to combine them credibly in a dissertation.

Primary research is data you collect yourself for your specific research question — interviews, surveys, observations or experiments — while secondary research is analysis of data or material that already exists, such as published statistics, archival records or existing datasets. Most dissertations use secondary sources for the literature review and then choose either primary or secondary data (or both) for the empirical chapter, depending on access and time.
Choosing between them is a practical decision as much as a methodological one: primary research gives you direct control over what is collected but takes longer and needs ethical approval; secondary research is faster to access but limits you to whatever was already recorded.
What counts as primary research
Primary research means you designed the data collection instrument and gathered the data yourself, for this specific project. Interviews, focus groups, surveys you distributed, observations you conducted, and experiments you ran are all primary research.
What counts as secondary research
Secondary research means using data or material that already existed before your project — government statistics, company reports, published datasets, historical archives, or a secondary analysis of a dataset originally collected for a different study.
A literature review is a form of secondary research: you are analysing existing published work, not generating new data. A dissertation based entirely on secondary sources (sometimes called a desk-based or library-based dissertation) is a legitimate and common design, particularly where primary access is difficult or an ethics timeline is tight.
Deciding which to use
Choose primary research when your question needs data that does not already exist, when you need control over exactly what is asked or measured, and when you have realistic time and access to reach participants. Choose secondary research when suitable existing data already answers a version of your question, when your timeframe or ethics approval is tight, or when the required scale (national statistics, historical trends) is not something an individual dissertation could realistically collect firsthand.
Combining primary and secondary data
Many strong dissertations combine both: a secondary dataset provides context or a baseline, and primary interviews or a survey add explanation or depth. Where you do this, be explicit in your methodology about which parts of your evidence base are primary and which are secondary, and why each was chosen for the objective it addresses.
- Secondary statistics can establish scale or trend; primary interviews can explain why the trend occurs.
- A primary survey can test a pattern found in secondary literature on a new population.
- Secondary case documents can be triangulated against primary interview accounts of the same events.
Quality checks specific to each type
For secondary data, check the source's original purpose, sampling method, date and any limitations the original authors stated — data collected for one purpose does not automatically transfer cleanly to another question. For primary data, the main quality checks are around your own instrument design, sampling strategy and, particularly for interviews, how consistently you applied your interview schedule.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a dissertation must include primary data collection when a well-justified secondary design would answer the question better.
- Using secondary data without checking how, when and by whom it was originally collected.
- Combining primary and secondary evidence without explaining in the methodology why each was included.
- Underestimating how long ethical approval and recruitment take for primary research.
- Treating a literature review as if it were primary evidence for your findings chapter.
Try this: Decide your evidence base
- List what your research question actually needs to know that does not already exist in published form.
- Search for existing (secondary) data that partially answers your question, noting its original purpose and limitations.
- Identify the gap between what secondary sources can tell you and what only primary data could answer.
- Decide, with your realistic timeframe in mind, whether to close that gap with primary data, accept a secondary-only design, or combine both.
